We, coffee drinkers, really love coffee! That is the reason we asked people of different age groups to find out what type of coffee they drink and why. We discovered some interesting facts about their personality through our discussions about coffee. We did not use coffee for second sight purposes, of course, but we did find out what type of coffee they prefer on a daily basis based on what criteria and circumstances. What do coffee drinkers have to say?
Our coffee lovers
You seem to be a real coffee aficionado. Could you please tell us what type of coffee you drink and what tasteful coffee combinations you have discovered?
«I drink Greek coffee, filter coffee, espresso, any type of coffee really. I enjoy a cup of coffee after a good lunch. Coffee helps digestion. On the other hand, I want to drink coffee in the morning since it wakes me up. It is a good tonic drink. Also, the perfect combination: coffee and a little bit of chocolate or a little bit of ground sesame in my Greek coffee for extra energy. This is a habit I came to know from my grandmother, who was from Smyrna. Coffee tastes even better if you are with friends!
In addition to Greek coffee, I also drink filter coffee. I tend to like filter coffee more in the afternoon especially during the winter season. I prepare a flavored filter coffee at home and add bits of clove and some cinnamon and the taste of coffee becomes better. During the summer, I add a few ice cubes in my filter coffee to make it cool so I can enjoy it.»
Undoubtedly a true, creative coffee aficionado!
How did coffee become part of your life?
«I started drinking Greek coffee because that was the type of coffee my parents used to drink. Coffee was something like a game to me at first because many of my fellow villagers, young and old alike, would gather around a coffee cup and try to foretell the future, just for the fun of it. Most of the time I drank Greek coffee at home but went for instant coffee, Nescafe, when out with friends. Those were the types of coffee that were widely known back then. After 1990, filter coffee and other coffee types became popular. Now, I prefer Greek coffee in the afternoon and instant throughout the rest of the day. Instant coffee gives the impression that it contains more coffee in it and I can enjoy it at my convenience. It is the type of coffee I drink with my friends. »
So, you mostly prefer to drink coffee with friends?
«Yes, I prefer drinking coffee with friends, whether at home or elsewhere. I like my coffee light with sugar and milk. A type of coffee I recently started to drink is latte with a little bit of espresso and lots of milk. Its taste is different from other types of coffee. And because I come from a fine arts background and consider myself a creative person, I enjoy taking creative possibilities and experimenting with different tastes.»
Could you give us an example?
«I once added a little bit of liqueur in my coffee and I really liked the result. »
We’ve never heard of such a combination before. You are indeed an imaginative person. But you also seem like a very demanding coffee drinker..
«For me, coffee is a ritual. It needs a little imagination: from how to achieve the best creamy layer in Greek coffee or how you will make your coffee look and taste good – it is all some form of art.»
Nikos, what coffee do you drink and on what occasions usually?
«In winter, I drink mostly cappuccino or sweetened Greek coffee. I like cappuccino in winter because it is hot and with cocoa on top it acquires an even better aroma. I prefer it in the morning because I don’t have time to make (Greek) coffee at home. I get coffee outside and go to work. So, cappuccino is both a practical and delicious coffee.»
And during the non-working hours, do you also drink cappuccino?
«No, I prefer Greek coffee. When I’m at home on Sunday mornings and I have time to make it or if I am on a trip to the mountains or a village. Greek coffee goes well with the atmosphere of a traditional village. After all, Greek coffee is related to the tradition, to the family. My grandfather introduced me to it. It has a delightful aroma and taste.»
So, you drink coffee to endure at work, but also for its taste and aroma?
«For all these. I drink coffee because it wakes me up but also for its taste. Sometimes I will get coffee to go, and at times I will drink when I am relaxed at home or out with friends. However, one thing is for sure and I am telling it to you as a coffee lover: to taste good, coffee must be made in a good mood. Otherwise, you cannot drink it. I also have the impression that a Greek person is a more fanatical coffee drinker than other people and inventive too. Frozen coffee is our creation. We take something and adapt it to our own data, we come up with something new. Coffee has become part of our culture.»
Nikos, you look simple, straightforward, you know what you want in your coffee and you enjoy it on all occasions
Maria, what coffee do you love to drink?
«The coffee of my generation is espresso and cappuccino. I don’t drink Greek (coffee). I find it bitter and heavy. I would also prefer filter coffee if I don’t have anything else but I consider it a little week in taste. Espresso and especially cappuccino are the coffee I love! I made it a part of my daily routine especially during my studies in Italy where I lived for 6 months. I loved the city, its culture, the shops, the way people drank their coffee. In the cafes, they drank espresso like shots. They drank coffee after the meal. Usually cappuccino after dinner.»
So, it’s because of Italy that you like espresso and cappuccino? Is it related to your good memories from this period?
«Taste comes first. I like the strong taste and nice bitterness of the espresso. In cappuccino, again, the bitterness of the coffee is balanced by the full flavor of the milk. That’s why I love cappuccino because it has this gratifying harmony in taste. A little cinnamon or cocoa on top and it’s ready. And of course, as you said, coffee is associated with my fondest memories from my studies in Italy. »
That means that you pay attention to the good taste and rich aroma but for you coffee is something beyond all that. I imagine it’s a good company, relaxation, and all the nice things you can think of. In what situations do you mainly drink coffee
«Espresso and cappuccino are dainty coffees and I drink them in the morning for toning and energy. Otherwise, the day does not start well. Maybe I’ll have a second coffee in the afternoon if I go out with friends or if I’m tired of demanding work and I need energy. I generally drink coffee in many situations like when I go to work, with friends, in a cafeteria or when taking a walk in the alleys of Athens. Before a trip I would always get a cup of coffee to have energy and have a good day.»
You love coffee very much and you are probably a tough judge.
«I think it shows! After all, coffee is an art! And if they don’t make me good coffee, I get incredibly annoyed (laughs). That’s why usually when I get coffee to go, I have specific coffee joints that I trust and some new nice ones that I discover. One thing is for sure: Life without coffee does not have the same taste.»
